Shropgeek was originally started 2 and half years ago by Zach Beauvais and Dean (Leu) Thorne, The idea was simple. A 'tweetup' once a month for like-minded geeks from around Shropshire. The definition of a geek was always seen as a loose one, welcoming anyone with that spark of the hacker about them: from developers and designers to enthusiasts and creative-types. It was a bit of an experiment to see how many fellow geeks there were, and the results were phenomenal: Shropshire has a lot of interesting people!
Sadly Leu passed away on 18th September 2009. However, after a break, a fellow regular Kirsty Burgoine stepped in to help organize the tweetups.
Mostly publicized through twitter, Shropgeeks get together on the 1st Friday of every month at the Admiral Benbow in Shrewsbury. The evenings start at 7.30pm and are a great opportunity for people working in all industries to socialize with no pressure of networking.
There is no fixed agenda, though topics are often suggested on twitter. The idea is to have a friendly catch-up from across the web, IT and adjoining industries with some beery banter and cheerful chat.
The next six monthly meet ups will be:
Friday 1st July 2011
Friday 5th August 2011
Friday 2nd September 2011 ~ The (R)Evolution!
Friday 7th October 2011
Friday 4th November 2011
Friday 2nd December 2011
Anybody is welcome to come along. The only criteria for joining in with Shropgeek is you have to show up!
